Pearl Brewery was founded in 1883 as the San Antonio Brewing Association on the banks of the San Antonio River, about a mile north of downtown. At its peak it was one of the largest breweries in Texas, producing beer under the Pearl brand name. The brewery operated continuously through Prohibition (briefly converting to alternative products) and remained active until 2001 when brewing operations officially ceased. In 2002 the property was purchased and redeveloped into the Pearl District, a mixed-use cultural and culinary destination that opened progressively through the 2000s and 2010s.

Hotel Emma opened in 2015 inside the meticulously restored Brew House of the original Pearl Brewery complex, a Romanesque Revival building constructed in 1894. The hotel is named after Emma Koehler, who took over management of the brewery after her husband Otto Koehler died in 1914 and guided it through the Prohibition era. The 146-room boutique hotel preserves many original industrial elements including large copper brewing vessels, original ironwork, and vaulted ceilings. It is consistently ranked among the best boutique hotels in the United States.

The Pearl Farmers Market runs every Saturday from 9 AM to 1 PM and Sunday from 10 AM to 2 PM year-round on the grounds of the Pearl complex. Vendors sell a wide range of locally grown produce, handmade cheeses, artisan breads, honey, jams, prepared foods, and crafts. The Saturday market is larger and draws the most vendors. The market is one of the most celebrated in Texas and regularly features live music, cooking demonstrations, and special seasonal events around holidays.

San Antonio has developed a thriving craft beer community in recent years. Notable breweries include Freetail Brewing, which opened in 2008 and was one of San Antonio's first craft breweries, known for its La Muerta Imperial Stout. Ranger Creek Brewing & Distilling is distinctive for producing both craft beer and bourbon whiskey. Blue Star Brewing Company near the Blue Star Arts Complex is another long-running institution. The city's Craft Beer Trail connects over 30 local breweries, making it an excellent destination for beer tourism.

The Pearl District hosts some of San Antonio's most acclaimed dining. Dough Pizzeria offers Neapolitan-style pizzas from a wood-burning oven and consistently earns top ratings. Cured, located in the restored Granary building, features house-cured charcuterie and farm-to-table cuisine. Southerleigh Fine Food & Brewery operates in the original Pearl brewhouse and serves Texas-influenced American food alongside house-brewed craft beers. The Sunday brunch scene at multiple Pearl restaurants is particularly popular with locals and visitors.

Yes—the Museum Reach extension of the San Antonio River Walk connects Pearl directly to the broader River Walk system that runs through downtown. The Museum Reach opened in 2009 and stretches approximately 1.3 miles from Pearl southward to Lexington Avenue, passing by the San Antonio Museum of Art. Visitors can walk, jog, or take a barge ride along this scenic stretch. The path features public art installations, native plantings, and connects Pearl to the wider River Walk network, making it easy to travel between the Pearl District and downtown without a car.

Pearl Beer (also marketed as 'Country Club Malt Liquor') was the signature product, a light American lager that was immensely popular in Texas and the Southwest from the 1950s through the 1990s. At its peak Pearl was Texas's best-selling beer. The brand was sold multiple times after the brewery closed in 2001, and Pearl Beer continued to be brewed under license at other facilities. A Texas company acquired the brand and revived it, and Pearl Beer is once again available in Texas markets today, though it is no longer brewed on the original Pearl site.

Emma Koehler, who was running the brewery after her husband Otto's death, pivoted the operation to produce non-alcoholic malt beverages, ice cream, and near-beer (a low-alcohol malt beverage permitted under Prohibition law). The brewery also produced commercial ice, which was in high demand. Emma's business acumen kept the workforce employed and the physical plant maintained throughout the 13-year dry period, so when Prohibition was repealed in 1933 Pearl was one of the first Texas breweries to resume full beer production almost immediately.

The Pearl property is owned and managed by Silver Ventures, a San Antonio-based investment group led by Christopher Hill, which purchased the 22-acre site in 2002. Silver Ventures has transformed the former industrial site into a mixed-use district with residential apartments, office space, retail, restaurants, Hotel Emma, and event lawns. Development has continued incrementally, with new buildings added throughout the 2010s and 2020s. The Pearl is often cited as a national model for adaptive reuse of historic industrial properties into vibrant community spaces.
